Auditions
Singing as a Visiting Choir in cathedrals requires a consistently high standard of musical performance.
You don’t need to take an audition before applying to come on a tour, but members are expected to be able to sight read to a reasonable standard and to be familiar with Anglican liturgy. As a guide, regular members of a good parish church choir, a university choir or a good choral society should feel comfortable with the musical standard required.
So when applying to go on our mailing list please include a brief note about your singing experience.
The choir reserves the right to hold auditions from time to time in order to maintain or raise musical standards.
In view of the shortage of rehearsal time, it is essential that prior personal preparation should be of a good standard. Members who do not learn the notes should understand that their lack of preparation has consequences for future choices of music and their place in the choir. Individual rhythmic, melodic and textural uncertainties are all too obvious when the ears and eyes of a congregation are focused on the choir in a cathedral service.
Rehearsal files of most of the music are usually available - with details given in the mailings for the tours - so there is no excuse for singers attending a tour without being well-prepared.
